API AUDIO 525 500-Series Compressor Module

API AUDIO 525 500-Series Compressor Module

API AUDIO 525 Overview

Offering an exact reissue of the famed original from the early '70s, the API Audio 525 is a peak-detecting feedback-style compressor and limiter module for 500-series racks. Sporting variable threshold and output levels, an analog VU meter for monitoring gain reduction, and a unique Ceiling control, which combines key functions, the 525 is a versatile vintage dynamics processor.

The unit sports a compression/limit switch, which sets the compression ratio to either 2:1 or 20:1. The attack time is as fast as 15Ā ?s and is fixed, in order to catch the fastest peaks and avoid the pumping effect. Four auto-release modes can be selected via two switches, and a de-ess function can be used to quash excessive sibilance and vocal pops. The 525 also features a hardwired bypass switch and balanced input and output. You can link two or more 525 modules for stereo processing and multichannel compression.

Reissue of a Classic
The API 525 is an exact reissue of the original 525 discrete compressor released in the early 1970s. It artfully combines API's proprietary transformers and the 2510 and 2520 op-amps while exhibiting the reliability, long life, and uniformity which is characteristic of all API products.
Dynamic Controls
An input (threshold) control and output (make-up gain) control are provided, along with an additional Ceiling fine-tune function which can increase gain reduction (lower threshold) while simultaneously raising the output level to match, so the user can alter dynamics on the fly without level changes. Four auto release modes are offered via two switches: 0.1, 0.5, 1.5, and 2.0 seconds.
Fine-Tuned Operation
Release times vary with frequency. High-frequency and full bandwidth content is released faster than lower frequencies, for natural envelope tracking. Attack time is fixed, chosen to catch the fastest peaks without pumping. Equally useful as a tracking, mixdown, or program compressor/limiter, the 525 utilizes vintage dynamics control and an easy to use multifunction control set.
